NATO TO SEND ENCOURAGING MESSAGE TO MACEDONIA FROM RIGA

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. Photo by NATO.NATO will send an encouraging message from Riga to the members of the Adriatic Group: Macedonia, Croatia, and Albania. This is the message that NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer sent from Brussels yesterday.

"I cannot say upfront what the closing declaration will say, but the framework message is encouraging," Scheffer said, responding to the question whether NATO will discuss the issue of when Macedonia, Croatia, and Albania will be invited to join the alliance.

"As you know, there is still no formal decision on when the leaders of the NATO member states will meet again. Most probably they will meet in spring year 2008. I do not exclude the possibility of these invitations being sent then," Scheffer said.

The NATO Summit that will be held in Riga on 28 and 29 November will be dedicated to the transformation of the Alliance.
