The European Union is dedicated to continuing the enlargement process toward the Western Balkan countries, but Macedonia must complete its homework and fulfill the necessary criteria, Michael Leigh, director-general of the European Commission Department for Enlargement, said yesterday. The quality of the laws enacted by the Macedonian Assembly, their harmonization with the EU laws, and guaranteeing democracy through stable institutions are the key elements for Macedonia's accession to the European Union, Leigh told the members of the assembly Committees for European Affairs and Foreign Policy.
"We assessed the key criteria, that is, the political criteria for Macedonia's integration into the European Union. Political stability of the institutions should be the key guarantee for rule of the law and democracy. Reforms in the judicature are necessary and the fight against organized crime and corruption should continue. These are the key elements for preparation of the country for possible membership in the EU," Leigh said after the meeting.
