OPPOSITION WITHDRAWS FROM DEBATE ON ELECTION CODE

The proposed amendments to the Election Code that foresee 10 guaranteed parliamentary seats for the smaller ethnic communities set the Government and the opposition against each other, the media report.

Dnevnik and Utrinski Vesnik comment that this could block the ratification of the package of laws from the sphere of the judicature. The assembly committee on political system adopted the Government's proposal for amendment of the Election Code, but only with the votes of the parliamentarians from the ruling parties. Opposition parties SDSM and BDI walked out of the session, because the Government did not consult them on this bill.
