The Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia will not debate on the name issue until it becomes clear whether Macedonia will receive an invitation for membership in NATO, whether UN mediator Matthew Nimetz’s last proposal for resolution of the name dispute is final, and whether Greece will veto Macedonia’s accession to NATO, a senior VMRO-DPMNE official stated. He said that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is even prepared for the Macedonian delegation to return to Skopje from Bucharest briefly so that the state and political leadership could assess the offer and build a position, after which the Assembly would adopt a resolution. But VMRO-DPMNE is categorical that the Macedonian citizens will have the final say as regards the name at a referendum, Dnevnik writes.

“Even though Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy, so far we have not received a proposal for an assembly debate on this issue. Such session could be held after the NATO Summit in Bucharest”, SDSM parliamentarian Vlado Buckovski assessed.

BDI’s Xhevat Ademi accused the Government of not observing the agreement reached at the last meeting of the party leaders, that is, for the Assembly to debate on this issue and adopt a position on Macedonia’s international name.
