Greece made a big mistake as regards the properties of “the Slav Macedonians” and it will find itself in a difficult situation if this case comes before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. This view was conveyed recently by the well-known Greek intellectual Alexis Iraklidis, university professor of international law, in his interview for the Greek daily Eleftherotypia.

“We confiscated their properties in year 1949-1950, without any court rulings. When they approach the court tomorrow, our country will be forced to pay them. As a European and democratic country that observes human rights, we committed a big ‘foul’ as regards this issue,” he stressed. Iraklidis’s position coincides with the theses of other Greek intellectuals who spoke openly over the last few weeks about the need for Greece to change its attitude toward “FYROM”.
