President Branko Crvenkovski met with UN mediator Matthew Nimetz in New York on Wednesday. Nimetz stated following the meeting that he sees no difference between the Macedonian Government and president's positions on the name issue and he stressed that this is not an obstacle to the talks.
The UN mediator also explained that these talks are not intended to resolve ethnic or historical issues, but the issue of the citizenship.
"We are not discussing ethnic or historical identities. We are talking about a name of a country and adjectives in relation to the state. In these talks on the name dispute, we are not talking about national or personal identities," UN mediator Matthew Nimetz said. He did not specify whether the possible new name with an adjective could affect the way in which the nation and language in Macedonia will be called.
