Following Demokracia e Re leader Imer Selmani’s appeal of two days ago for foreign mediation between the leaders of the political parties, there are no concrete reactions from the US Embassy and the Skopje-based EU Office.
The EU office only said that, the dialogue between the Government and the opposition is necessary to reach consensus over the present difficulties and to move forward. The written statement also says that the issues regarding the functioning of Parliament and the holding of elections require full dedication.”
The political dialogue that collapsed Tuesday is the main topic in the political circles accompanied by the central question of whether Gruevski is going to realize his threat of holding elections without the opposition and whether Crvenkovski is truly going to boycott.
The leader of Demokracia e Re, Selmani, appealed for international mediation immediately after the failure of the meeting with President Gjorge Ivanov Tuesday to produce results.
“Tonight I can definitely say that Macedonia needs international mediation, especially from the USA and the EU, because the country is in a dead end,” he said.
Nikola Gruevski and Ali Ahmeti decided that the elections without Branko Crvenkovski will be legitimate enough. After Branko Crvenkovski said that in spite of the accepted conditions he still insisted that A1’s account be unblocked as a crucial demand, the two governing partners assed the meeting in President Ivanov’s office Tuesday as unproductive and said the elections would be held in end May or early June.
Gruevski said the government could call elections even if SDSM boycotts previously as well. BDI insisted on an agreement over the elections among all political parties and considered the boycott as damaging. However, after the meeting Ahmeti suddenly changed his stance.
“We did everything we could for the opposition to become a part of the process of seeking out a solution to the problems. Unfortunately, that did not happen because the opposition demands are so illogical that cannot be accepted. BDI and I myself did everything we could,” Ahmeti said after the meeting.
“If someone refuses to take part in the elections, that is their problem. No one can set illegal and illogical demands to run in the elections in return. Voters give credibility and trust to those who run in the elections. We are going to run and try to win their trust,” Prime Minister Gruevski said after the meeting Tuesday.
