Macedonia’s Parliament, following the first multi-party elections, unanimously adopted a Declaration of Sovereignty. 8 September 1991: An overwhelming majority of the Macedonian public approved a referendum on independence. - 1,495,807 were registered to vote for the referendum. - 1,074,855 (71.86%) actually cast their vote. Out of registered voters, 1,021,981 (68.32%) voted for independence. Out of those who actually voted, 95.08% were for independence. Out of the registered voters, 38,986 (2.61%) voted against independence. 13,986 ballots were registered as invalid.

Gruevski's Government won support late Saturday evening with 68 votes "for", 22 votes "against", and no abstentions. The Government was elected following a two-day long debate and boycott of the BDI and PPD parliamentarians. |

In his inaugural speech in the Assembly today mandatary Nikola Gruevski announced start of the negotiations with the European Union in year 2007. "We do not hide our ambition for Macedonia to start the negotiations for membership in the EU in year 2007. We are aware that this depends on us to a great extent. We have the cadre and we have huge political will and support from the Macedonian citizens, who deserve this. But we also expect a new impulse from our partners in the European Union", mandatary Gruevski said in his address before the Assembly. Meanwhile a few thousand Albanians protested in front of the Assembly because the BDI was not included in the new Government coalition.
